Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Inova Loudoun Hospital and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital have all earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group. This national nonprofit watchdog assigns a letter grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 measures. Some of those measures include of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them.

“Inova’s consistent attainment of top grades from the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, with four hospitals securing A grades, is a testament to our unwavering commitment to patient safety,” said Dr. Chapy Venkatesan, chief quality officer of Inova. “This achievement reflects our steadfast dedication to providing the highest standard of care across our healthcare system to every patient, in every community we are privileged to serve.”

A national distinction, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades recognize Inova’s achievements in protecting patients from harm and providing safer healthcare. Only 40 hospitals in Virginia were awarded “A” grades for the spring term of 2024. Of those, four are Inova hospitals.

“It is with immense pride that I commend our hospitals for their consistent excellence, particularly this year with Inova Loudoun achieving A grades for an impressive 25 grading periods, Inova Fair Oaks for 24 and Inova Mount Vernon for 20,” said Dr. J. Stephen Jones, president and CEO of Inova. “This remarkable accomplishment reflects our unmatched commitment to providing the highest level of safe, quality care.”

“Everyone who works at Inova should be proud of this ‘A’ Hospital Safety Grade,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “It takes complete dedication of at every level, and an ironclad commitment to putting patients first. I thank Inova its leadership, clinicians, staff, and volunteers for caring so deeply for its patients and their safety.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program focused exclusively on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring. To see Inova’s full grade details and to access patient tips for staying safe in the hospital, visit HospitalSafetyGrade.org and follow The Leapfrog Group on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram and via The Leapfrog Group newsletter.

A dedicated race category for wheelchair users has been introduced for the upcoming Run the Greenway event on May 4th at Loudoun Station. The Roll 5K category allows wheelchair participants to compete for medals, recognition, and prizes.

This step towards inclusivity and equal opportunity offers awards to the top three finishers, including medals and a gift card to PR Run & Walk. The initiative has received positive feedback from the Ability Fitness Center team at The Arc of Loudoun, who collaborated with the Dulles Greenway to improve wheelchair accessibility for the event. Members of the center, like Anthony Ringenberg, have utilized assistive technology such as wheelchairs in past races, with Ringenberg being the first wheelchair finisher in previous events. He described crossing the finish line as the most fulfilling moment of the race.

“It’s like working through the suck, and getting to the end and feeling the burn, and knowing that hey, I did it,” he said. “And also being number one. That’s a nice thing.”

This year, for the first time, Ringenberg might take home a gold medal for his accomplishment.

“If we had more people, there might be someone out there who can beat me,” Ringenberg said. “Might be.”

The Run the Greenway event is important to the Ability Fitness Center team, especially M.J. Weier, who sees it as a return to their passion of cycling after a spinal injury.

“One of the reasons I like competition and this particular event is that it gives me something to train for,” she said. “Rather than just going and doing it just to get exercise, it gives me a reason to do it, it gives me a goal to try and improve my time.”

Measured in kilometers, the Greenway has become a significant achievement for participants like Lindsay Roberts. During the inaugural Run, Walk or Roll event two years ago, she navigated the entire route in her wheelchair. The following year, she made a triumphant return, receiving a round of applause as she crossed the finish line on foot.

“My goal for this year is to walk more than just the finish line,” she said. “Assisted—I still use a cane—but one day, I’m going to be able to drop it and just walk it, no problem.”

“We’re thrilled to partner with The Arc of Loudoun to make Run The Greenway race accessible for individuals with disabilities,” Dulles Greenway Public & Customer Relations Manager Terry Hoffman said. “Our annual race is inclusive for all Northern Virginia athletes, and we look forward to providing a welcoming and accessible venue for all our participates to display their skills.”

The new category is thanks in part to a new partner in the race: Potomac River Races, the race management company that added a wheelchair category to its timekeeping.

“We’re excited to work on Run the Greenway,” Potomac River Races Director of Operations Terri Marlin said. “It’s a race in our backyard. We’re really happy to be part of this and to help raise money for all the local community organizations that means so much to so many people.”

Each year, Run the Greenway helps raise funds for local nonprofit organizations. Last year, the race drew around 2,000 runners and raised nearly $270,000 for local nonprofits.

“Since we partnered to create Run, Walk or Roll the Greenway two years ago, the race has been more than just a fundraiser for our clients, staff and families,” The Arc of Loudoun CEO Lisa Kimball said. “It brings out that same indomitable spirit that our staff and clients bring to work and school every day. That’s part of building a lifetime of opportunities and a just, equitable world for people with disabilities.”

Registration is open now for Run the Greenway’s 5K, 5K Roll, 10K, and Kids Fun Run races, along with virtual options to donate or create your own fundraising site without running. For more information, visit dullesgreenway.com/run-the-greenway. To register, visit thearcofloudoun.org/greenway.

A young, brave woman, who graduated from Leesburg’s Heritage High School, has sadly succumbed to cancer after displaying remarkable resilience throughout her fight against the disease.

On February 11, Rocky Elardo passed away from Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. She received her diagnosis in 2019 and embarked on a courageous fight against this devastating disease. Remarkably, Rocky even summoned the strength to return to the basketball court during her battle.

The sad news comes nearly a year to the date of her game-winning basketball shot during her Heritage High School varisty basketball game. Rocky made a three-point shot at the buzzer to defeat a neighboring school in Ashburn, Virginia.

A live vigil was held a few days before her passing outside her home. Varisty basketball teammates, parents, neighbors, friends and family lit up the yard and played Rocky’s favorite music.

Shouts of “we love you Rocky” could be heard throughout the evening as she listened by her open window above the crowd. Through tears her parents spoke and expressed their gratitude.

Rocky who played basketball since the age of 4, is quoted on novahoops.com as stating: “Always see the best in every situation because there is always positivity somewhere. There is light at the end of the tunnel.” –Rocky Elardo

Rest in peace, Rocky.

As part of the national Stop the Bleed® campaign, the Inova Virts Miller Family Emergency and Trauma Center at Inova Loudoun Hospital is hosting a free, in-person workshop on Wednesday, Feb. 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. This free course is designed for community members who may find themselves at the scene of an emergency.

During an emergency, no matter how quickly emergency professionals respond, the individuals on-scene are best positioned to assist and potentially stop life-threatening blood loss. This is critical because a person who is bleeding profusely can die from blood loss within five minutes.

Workshop attendees will enhance their emergency preparedness by learning the difference between bleeding and life-threatening blood loss, and how to react to both. Participants will practice with tourniquets and wound packing.

The workshop will be held at Inova Loudoun Hospital, 44045 Riverside Pkwy., The Ladies Board Education Center, Suite 160, Leesburg. Follow signs for the South Hospital Entrance.  Free on-site parking is available.

Participation is free but space is limited. To register visit inova.org/stopthebleed.

Here’s a story to tug at your heart strings this holiday season. Kindergartners at Waterford Elementary School are making sure sick kids at local hospitals receive a gift this Christmas.

Each year, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office collects new toys for Christmas to deliver to sick children at area hospitals. The toy drive, now in its eigth year, received a big boost when the Waterford kindergarten class raised $800 through their annual ornament sale to purchase and donate new toys.

A social media post by the LCSO published on Dec. 14, read “Our hearts are bursting with gratitude as we share some heartwarming news from our local elementary school! This morning, the LCSO Motor Elves stopped by Waterford Elementary School and Ms. Pack’s class to pick up toys for Cole’s Closet. These kindergarten superheroes raised $800 through their annual ornament stand to purchase toys. The future looks bright with these amazing young minds leading the way.”

Cole’s Closet is a non-profit that helps fill “closets” at area hospitals for children receiving care. For more information about Cole’s Closet, please visit www.colescloset.org.

There is still time to donate new, unwrapped toys for children from ages infant to the age of 17. Donations will be accepted until December 19, and the toys can be dropped off at any LCSO Station, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

The drop-off locations are:

Eastern Loudoun Station – 46620 East Frederick Drive, Sterling

Ashburn Station – 20272 Savin Hill Drive, Ashburn

Dulles South Public Safety Center – 25216 Loudoun County Parkway, Chantilly

As the holiday season approaches, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church understands that for some people, the Christmas season does not bring the joy and happiness that is advertised. Whether grieving the loss of a loved one, marriage, job, or simply stressed out from the demands of preparing for the holidays, it may not feel like “the most wonderful time of the year.” You are not alone, millions struggle with sadness in this season.

In response to this, St. Peter’s will host a “Blue Christmas,” a service of light in the midst of darkness on Thursday, Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. at 37018 Glendale Street in Purcellville. This service is open to everyone in the community, regardless of religious affiliation. Through peaceful and inspiring music, comforting scriptures, and healing prayers, you’ll be reminded of the presence and love of God and the comfort and hope He offers to all. Cookies and cocoa will follow in the fellowship hall.
