The YMCA of Loudoun County is making sure children have fun and engaging activities to keep them busy during social distancing and school closures.

On a recent Friday afternoon, several volunteers distributed over 200 activity packets to families at the YMCA Youth Development Center in Sterling. The kits were filled with arts and crafts supplies, bubbles, card games, books and more.

Cars line up to receive activity kits for children.

“During this unpredicted time, we can’t forget about our young community members who, many times, feel confused or highly anxious,” said Kasia Bochenek, business director for YMCA Loudoun County. “We hope that the activity packages will help to promote creativity and imagination by the unstructured style of play and help children to think more freely, by designing their own activities, and approach the world in imaginative ways.”

The activity packages are for families who struggle in the current situation. The intent is to remove some of the pressure on parents to find fun activities for children during this time, according to Bochenek.

Volunteers distributed the activity kits to waiting families on a recent Friday afternoon.

YMCA Loudoun County Board members and the congregation of the Cornerstone Chapel of Leesburg made the activity packages possible.

Currently, preparation is underway for the next activity package distribution. The Cornerstone Chapel of Leesburg is collecting items for the next drive. If you’d like to donate, you’ll have to schedule an appointment to drop off. You are asked to send an email to kasia.bochenek@ymcadc.org or Robert.Blakely@ymcadc.org to arrange a time.

Only new items are accepted. Items may include balls, jump ropes, coloring books, chalks, coloring pencils, reading books, puzzles, board games etc.

In the meantime, to learn about the next activity package drive, parents should follow the YMCA Loudoun County Facebook page
