Music Therapy is Uplifting Medical Staff at Inova Loudoun

Ray Leone is the Director of Medical Music Therapy for the nonprofit A Place To Be in Middleburg. He’s also in charge of Music Therapy at Inova Health System.

Normally he’s playing music for patients at Inova Loudoun hospital to help ease their pain. Unfortunately, he’s not able to play for them due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He’s continuing to share music therapy with medical staff, however.

According to WJLA, he’s playing exclusively in the main hallway to help calm and relieve stress that nurses and doctors may be experiencing. He’s also making ‘Song of the Day’ videos that he records from home and uploads to YouTube.

A Place to Be

Middleburg-based music therapy nonprofit A Place to Be, is also addressing the isolation and stress that affects children and their families during this time.

“We help people face, navigate, and overcome life’s challenges through the performing arts and we use music therapy as a portal for healing,” said Tom Sweitzer, co-founder of the program.

Since the pandemic, the nonprofit has offered teletherapy and free calming sessions to Loudoun County Public School students who’ve been referred to them by counselors and schools.

“(We are) meeting the client where they are and using live music to calm them, lessen anxiety and allow them to express themselves,” said Sweitzer.

The class includes 30 minutes of music. To learn more about A Place to Be, visit www.aplacetobeva.org.
